The Magnificent Dinosaur Hunters (CLA: Back of Beyond Scenario)

CLA__BoBCover2I have to go back to print more copies of the Back of Beyond Supplement for Contemptible Little Armies and the printer had a minimum of 48 pages and our book was only 44 pages. I didn’t want to put in 4 blank pages, so I threw together a quick scenario to add to it (no change in the price either). But I know that a lot of people already have the Back of Beyond book or PDF, so I am sharing the scenario here for all to use.

The Gobi Desert of the 1920s was a lawless land where petty tyrants and warlords controlled their territories through fear and intimidation. The small farming and herding villages lived in fear of these Bandits and their regular raids to collect tribute, necessary to maintain their disorganized bands. The people excepted this as the status quo and did little to stop it. But, what if one of these villages sat in an area rich in “dragon bones,” dinosaur fossils prized by museums around the world? And what if a well-armed party of paleontologists just so happened to be visiting the area at the time when the bandits would attack?

This scenario pits a small group of Dinosaur Hunters (page 35) and villagers against an attacking force of Chinese Bandits (page 26). The scenario is an homage to the great movies The Seven Samurai and the Magnificent Seven. The board should be set up with a small village in the center and 2 roads intersecting in the middle of it (so there will be 4 ways into the village) and extending all the way to the table edge. The roads should have barricades at each entry point to the village. The area surrounding the village should have enough hill and rocky terrain to provide cover for the bandits. All movement, not in the village or on the roads is rough ground and figures are at half movement. The village should be big enough that it takes at least 2 turns of movement to get from one barricade to another. It should also take no more than 2 turns for cavalry to get from the board edge to a barricade if moving on the road.

The Dinosaur Hunters will have a unit of 6 Dinosaur Hunters plus 1 sniper using the Sniper rules for Dinosaur Hunters. They will also have a unit of 21 local Chinese laborers. This is roughly 200 points. The bandits will have a force of 400 points. It should consist of 2 units of cavalry, one unit of Red Spear/Big Sword warriors and the remainder of the points used on Chinese Bandits (not Bandit Soldiers) and 1 sniper.

The attack by the bandits will come in four parts.

Part 1

Mark the roads 1-4. The bandit player secretly chooses one of the 4 roads to begin on. Before the Bandit player placing any models, the Dinosaur Hunter splits his force in any way to defend all 4 barricades, all models must be within 4” of the barricades with the exception of the sniper. After the defenders have all been placed, a unit of Bandit cavalry is placed at the table edge on the pre-selected road. The Bandit player then has 4 turns to breach one of the barricades with at least half his starting unit (breaching in this case means moving across the barricade and into the village) or, must eliminate all models within 4” of the barricade. A cavalry model can jump the barricade by passing a morale test when in base contact with the barricade. If the test fails, the horse will not jump and the model must remain outside the barricade. If the Bandit player succeeds they receive 1 VP, if they do not, then the Dinosaur Hunters receive 1 VP. At the end of 4 turns, any cavalry models still alive return to the bandit camp (no shooting at the fleeing models).

Part 2

Mark the roads 1-4. The Bandit player secretly chooses one of the 4 roads to begin on. As with Part 1, before the Bandit player places and models, the Dinosaur Hunters and Laborers should be placed at the 4 barricades. After the defenders have all been placed, a unit of Bandit RedSpear/Big Sword warriors is placed at the table edge on the pre-selected road. The Bandit player then has 4 turns to breach one of the barricades with at least half his starting unit or he must eliminate all models within 4” of the barricade. If a model attempts to cross the barricade and there is no opposing model on the other side, it takes a full move. If there is an opposing model, then the model must be eliminated before a move can be taken. If the Bandit player succeeds they receive 1 VP, if they do not, then the Dinosaur Hunters receive 1 VP. At the end of 4 turns, any Bandit models still alive return to the bandit camp (no shooting at the fleeing models).

Part 3

Night falls. The bandit player places 4 tokens in the hills outside the village no more than 12” from any barricade. One of them is secretly marked to represent a sniper. At least half of the Dinosaur Hunter’s remaining force should be split among the 4 barricades with at least one Dinosaur Hunter at each barricade (the remaining models are inside buildings). The sniper can only be eliminated in close combat. The sniper gets the first activation and can target any model at a barricade on the first turn. The Dinosaur Hunter must send 4 models to investigate the 4 markers. Once they cross the barricade (full movement) then they cannot be targetted by the sniper unless all other models at the barricades are eliminated. If the sniper eliminates at least 1 Dinosaur Hunter, the Bandit player gets 1 VP. If he fails, the Dinosaur Hunter gets 1 VP.

Part 4

The final assault. Mark the roads 1-4. The Bandit player secretly chooses two of the 4 roads to begin on. As with Part 1, before the Bandit player places and models, the Dinosaur Hunters and Laborers should be placed at the 4 barricades. After the defenders have all been placed, the Bandit player places all of his remaining models split evenly between the two chosen roads. The Bandit player will then have 5 turns to kill the sniper and at least 5 of the 6 Dinosaur Hunters. Any Dinosaur Hunters killed during previous Parts count toward this total. If the Bandit player is able to do this, then he gets 3 VP. If he fails, then the Dinosaur Hunter gets 3 VP.

Players should feel free to swap different forces and change up starting conditions to create their own Back of Beyond Magnificent Seven scenario. If you do, please share it on Facebook at either facebook.com/BrigadeGames or facebook.com/RattrapProductions.
